12 June 2019.Maybe you know the phrase “cosmic love” from Prime Video’s namesake astrology-based dating show. “Florence + The Machine – Cosmic Love.” Genius, 3 July 2009, /Florence-the-machine-cosmic-love-lyrics. “Cosmic Love.” Wikipedia, Wikimedia Foundation, 5 Nov. I think her vocal timbre lends itself well to the grandeur of the lyrics and the overall theme of the song in the large-scale galaxy imagery. In Cosmic Love, in particular, her voice sounds very clear, even when she’s holding notes for a continuous amount of time. It always sounds very clear and rich, almost leaning towards resonant. All of the songs that I’ve heard of theirs amaze me at the sound of her vocals – regardless of her vocal classification, she has a very recognizable tone color. As someone who doesn’t know much about vocal classification or singing, all I can say on that matter is that she sounds pretty incredible to me. According to some of the research I did on her as an artist, and there was one source that listed Florence’s vocal classification as Mezzo-Soprano – however, there were many disagreements with this classification, including the fact that the one doing the classifying was merely running a vocal blog and was not a professional. So in this section, I wanted to address Florence Welch’s vocal timbre, as well as her vocal classification. The Outro, while not conducted in lyrics, was a repetition of the melody (I think?) in the form of soft arpeggiated chords on the harp accompanied by piano until it gradually fades out of earshot. This was unexpected to me, because for some reason I thought the bridge acted as a third verse, but it would make more sense that it would act as the bridge to the final repetition of the chorus. The form of this song was fascinating to me – it didn’t particularly feel like a binary ABAB form, and when looking at the lyrics, it was shown to be in the fairly standard form of Verse 1/ Chorus/ Verse 2/ Chorus/ Bridge/ Chorus/Outro. Of course, song lyrics can always be interpreted differently for everyone who listens to them, but I have a special place in my heart for this song and the lyrics with it. It can be interpreted in both a positive and negative aspect when applying it towards the love expressed in the lyrics. One of my favorite bits about the lyrics is that the chorus is ambiguous in regards to meaning. We were working really hard on a song and just trying to make this shit piano part work, and all of a sudden I hit on one note, and I’d got it. I went to her studio after having been to a party, and I was lying on the floor wanting to vomit. The most hungover I’ve ever been when writing a song. “Cosmic Love was a joke title, but it stuck. On writing Cosmic Love, Florence Welch said this The lyrics evokes very ethereal, emotionally charged feelings for the listeners (or maybe it’s just me!) and I think it’s interesting to know the backstory of how the song came to be. Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too “I took the stars from our eyes, and then I made a mapĪnd knew that somehow I could find my way back “And in the dark, I can hear your heartbeatīut then it stopped, and I was in the darkness, Verse 2 and 3 also contribute to the vastness, the scope, that these feelings may hold, while at the same time alluding to something more melancholy.

This is an interesting way of describing the feelings that the individual may have. The lyrics suggest images of exploding stars and galaxies amidst the shadows of the heart of the person they may love. No dawn, no day, I’m always in this twilight “The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out The stanza of lyrics immediately following the introduction, the chorus, hits us with striking imagery: The harp emphasizes that surreal, dreamy texture and it doubles down on the imagery of the stars alongside the lyrics, thus beginning the ‘cosmic’ theme of the piece. I screamed aloud, as it tore through them, and now it’s left me blind”Ī bit of stark lyrics against a backdrop of instrumental focused on creating a dreamlike setting or feeling. “A falling star fell from your heart and landed in my eyes
